I'm new to the Laszlo system, and have some basic questions which perhaps someone here could help with:
I'm currently running a weblog using MovableType, which uses Xhtml, Javascript, PHP, and CSS.
1) Is this software free for non-commercial use? and how much is it on a commercial site?
2) Is it possible to integrate XML as used by Laszlo with the xhtml used on the page to have this system as a display method for my content?
3) in using xml on an xhtml site, can it still validate?
4) to use it on a site, I assume i have to install this software on my hosts servers? planning on running it from this computer too as a test facility before exposing my coding skills to the web.
5) lastly is there an online chat room to post laszlo based questions, or is this the only place?
Thanks for all your help with this,
jamie

Hi Jamie
I've answered your questions below:
1) Is this software free for non-commercial use? and how much is it on a commercial site?
Talk to sales@laszlosystems.com about pricing and usage.
2) Is it possible to integrate XML as used by Laszlo with the xhtml used on the page to have this system as a display method for my content?
In theory yes, but I don't think the XHTML that your installation of MovableType outputs is XML compliant; for example it doesn't escape ampersands (&), which need to be escaped in real XML. To see what I mean, look at the generated source for one of your XHTML pages and save it out as a .xml file, then try to open it in a browser that understands XML (e.g. Internet Explorer on a PC).
3) in using xml on an xhtml site, can it still validate?
Not sure what you mean here. Are you saying MovableType can be set to output XML only. If so, then that's what you want.
4) to use it on a site, I assume i have to install this software on my hosts servers? planning on running it from this computer too as a test facility before exposing my coding skills to the web.
Yes, you'd have to install it on a host. You can download and install the LPS for free on your development machine.
5) lastly is there an online chat room to post laszlo based questions, or is this the only place?[/quote]
This is the only chat room, but there is laszlouser.org too.

Thanks for your help and responding to my queries. I'm now using the Laszlo BlogBlox to show links within the MovableType powered site. MT can indeed output XML files, and you can use MT tags within to generate the content (using a modified version of the xml syndication feature) although ampersands still have to be hand encoded as &
Even using the blogblox, the page still validates as xhtml complient and css valid.
unfortunately the laszlouser.org doesn't appear to work, it just gives the message: Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)
From what I've read, I believe I can use code posted on mylaszlo.com within my site without having a full installation of laszlo systems, is that correct? in which case do I just copy and paste the code into my template, or do I have to add code/files anywhere else too?

Yes, you can post an app on mylaszlo and include absolute option/embed tags in your HTML source code, in the same sort of way that Soundblox and Photoblox work.
Remember that mylaszlo.com is for non-commercial use though.
