Can Laszlo be used outside of a browser?

For example, can the Flash viewer be used to load a Laszlo application? Any documentation or examples of such a thing?

I am interested in launching a small app from the system tray in Windows.

Yes, you should be able to load a Laszlo app in a standalone Flash player by specifying the URL where the app resides in the File -> Open dialog. Note that you would need to make sure that the query string of the URL contains "lzt=swf".
