BaseDatePIcker Question

I am not understanding how the the Base Date components get extended and used. I looked at the sample code and I see that these classes are extended, but they never appear to be instantiated and yet show up arbitrairily under the view created to label the days of the week. I don't see how I can implement a custom implementation that looks and behaves like I want when these objects seem to have a lifecycle and layout out of my control. What am I missing?
