Antun, Are there any special steps I need to take when installing lps-de on a machine with lps-dr already installed?
Also, updating the jdk ... any special steps?

You shouldn't need to worry about it at all - are you on Windows? If so, the LPS is installed in c:\lps-v1, instead of c:\lps-dr, so all your old files will remain intact.
As for the JDK, the installer will use whichever JAVA_HOME environment variable it finds when it is run.
It's safe to delete c:\lps-dr entirely if you want.

Ahh, so Laszlo does not get involved with the windows registry which has greatly frustrated me in my eight years as a Windows developer .... and apparently Microsoft too! because .NET framework versions co-exist and .NET apps coexist and install with xcopy !

Actually, the Windows installer does add a couple of things to the registry - mostly defining the .lzx file type.
But that's more or less the extent of it.
