ourmedia -- a major new open-source media project to create a global library for grassroots media -- needs the help of some brilliant Laszlo developers.
Specifically, we need a few coders who can help us configure Laszlo to work properly within Drupal, giving us the ability to show off videos, music and audio in a compelling way.
Briefly:
The well-respected Internet Archive (www.archive.org) is giving ourmedia free storage and free bandwidth so that we can expose all kinds of amateur works: independent films, movie shorts, photo and art galleries, video games, home-brew political ads, music videos, children's tales, Flash animations, student films, and so on. More background info about the project at www.open-media.org
This will be more than just another destination site or portal -- it will be a global repository of many thousands of freely shareable works, licensed under Creative Commons, so that users can summon up any of the works on their desktops at the click of a mouse. It's all open source, open schemas, open APIs.
Sound cool yet?
We are blown away by some of the functionalities we've seen in Laszlo (such as your Dashboard app), and want to incorporate those features into ourmedia (giving Laszlo full credit, of course!) We're beginning to build the site this week in Drupal, an open source platform.
Currently we have about 100 people who are volunteering in our wiki. (Drop me an email and I'll invite you in.) It's an impressive group that includes
the founders of several companies, such as flickr, and tech luminaries like Howard Rheingold ("Smart Mobs"), Larry Lessig and Jon Lebkovsky.
We need more volunteers to help out with development. If you can squeeze in some time, it would help greatly.
Please contact JD Lasica: jd@well.com or (925) 600-0639 in the SF East Bay.
Thanks. This is a project that your grandchildren may well see -- and use.
